When we dream about starting our career in software industry, we think of landing up in a programming or development role. Some of us start learning programming languages like Java, JSP, EJB, .Net. VB etc and some pursue certifications like SCJP (Sun Certified Java Programmer), MCSD (Microsoft Certified Software Developer), SCJD (Sun Certified Java Developer) etc. many of us speculate about forthcoming so called "Hot Technologies" and make effort to learn the skills required for this new technology. After all this hard work and effort which consumes significant amount of time and money, we start applying for a suitable job for a programmer or developer position. Resume is circulated among friends, friends of friends & relatives networks. Resume in all the famous job search portals like http://naukri.com, http://dice.com or http://monster.com is posted and regularly updated. The regular updating is done to ensure that our resumes stay in top in all the employer searches. Only very few of us are fortunate enough to get interview calls and finally make it to the desired job. What happens to others? Why do the rest of us not receive any interview call? Is there anything wrong with our resume?

Any Guesses….?

For those who thought of "attitude" and "being" of the person who is applying have got the right answer. The second thing is the perception of going in to "Programming" field. Well for all my programmers' friends or those who have got strong programming skills and mindset, I would like to tell that I am not against programming. I myself started my career as a Java Programmer and produced extraordinary results. My only idea of writing this article is to educate those who need a start or those who are struggling in getting a job such that people get a fair understanding of what is available in the software industry and which field they should take in which they are passionate and have the potential to produce breakthrough results.

To take forward the perception of Programming, we think that this is the only respectable job in software industry. Even when we meet in a social gathering and come across a friend, we generally ask a question "Which language you are working into?" When I was still recruiting during the day and writing software at night I worked elbow to elbow with fellow recruiters. I used to criticize the recruiter who was always fussing with the computer and their files. Do you know why? I'm guessing you think it is because I am so arrogant that I did not want to listen to anyone else's ideas. You are wrong, although I do like my own ideas! The real reason, however, was that I knew this recruiter was never going to be successful and we would lose money. Time after time, year after year for 15 years, I found that the recruiters who focused on the recruiting tool and gimmicks rather than execution failed. Someone once told me that Vince Lombardi, a very successful football coach, had only about 6 plays. The success was all in the execution!

So, why have I spent half of my life writing recruiting software and trying to make it better? Because I love my work and the creativity of it and I know I can give a really good recruiter an edge. I know the recruiting firm will be successful with or without me but I can make a difference. I truly enjoy working with successful people and the rewards and appreciation mean so much more to me.

What makes good recruiting software? This depends on the recruiter or recruiting firm and their business model. There are a number of good recruiting software packages but fundamentally the software must be extremely easy to use, it has to focus on the execution of the client or applicant call and it has to gather information through, what I like to call, the natural process of recruiting. If the software gathers information naturally and easily it will feed into the critical element of recruiting, marketing! Recruiting software must compliment or follow the natural process of recruiting. Notice I did not say the software must be intuitive! You might ask what exactly is natural? If your applicant tracking, staffing or resume database software requires you to perform tasks that you would not ordinarily do then you must question the recruiting software. Now, I have to admit that everything you do as a recruiter might not be considered natural.

Natural or not, the recruiting process can be simplified into a few basic steps.

1. Get a job order by calling clients and recording the calls for future marketing and follow up.

2. Research a database or databases for applicants or referral sources that would be a good fit for the job order.

3. Call identified applicants and record calls.

4. Determine the applicant(s) to present and present the applicant(s) to the client.

5. Track the interview process to the point of hire and the applicant starting to work for the client.

That's right, only 5 steps! This is what is so alluring to people thinking about recruiting as a career. But any experienced recruiter will tell you that each of these steps demands a fantastic amount of skill, resources and marketing to be successful.

The job of executive search software is to make sure that each of these 5 steps can be performed without any wasted motion. Note that my emphasis is on saving recruiters time and is not on features. I cannot begin to count the features I have reviewed and discarded. They looked like a good idea at the time but simply could not stand up to the daily grind of a recruiter.

I have always said that I could take six seniors majoring in IT from any university and come up with a recruiting system in about 6 months. It would then take me about ten years to make it really work for a recruiter.

I think everyone would agree that there are many ways to perform the 5 steps. But I like to think of them performed in an ultimately natural process. We only give in grudgingly to the limitations of computer code making the recruiter do something besides talking to a qualified applicant or client.

So what would be the ultimate? Have the recruiter sit next to a phone and be told or shown who to call and be informed of the full nature and objective of the call. Have all the information available that might be needed for the call without doing anything but talking. Then when this call is finished all the follow up information regarding this call is recorded without any effort by the recruiter. Then the recruiter talks to the next client or applicant. This is the ultimate goal of any applicant tracking, staffing, recruiting software or whatever else you want to call it. This is what I like to call the natural process of recruiting. To me anything else takes away from the effectiveness of the recruiter.

For example, if using a resume database or any recruitment tool causes the recruiter to stop at the end of the day to 'feed' the database just to keep the rest of the executive recruiters, management and himself/herself informed then the recruiting system is not natural. The recruiter had to perform a task not related to talking to an applicant or client. The recruiter had to run back behind the lines, count noses, inform and organize for the next assault because the army was in disarray. What if the recruiter miscounts?

Notice I have not said a thing about features, even though I have spent half of my life writing them and continue to write them with all the excitement I had 20 years ago. A feature is only valuable if it suits the way a recruiter or recruiting firm works. Also, be careful that you do not get so dazzled with a feature that it takes you off of your successful game. The feature must be an enhancement to what is working for you right now. This is very hard to see and really can only be determined by using the product. Be careful of demos as they can be very misleading. A long trial period is best.

If the recruiting product fits your natural style and it is a proven product with a good track record then you are almost home. Almost? Yes, if the product does not allow you to focus on using the database of information gathered for a powerful and deliberate marketing program then keep looking. Marketing is everything in recruiting!

A positioning statement is the same way. If it's so complicated that even you and your sales reps can't remember it, you're guaranteed that your customers won't either.

4. Compelling. What's the point in telling someone something that isn't interesting and doesn't apply to them? If you're taking the risk of lying, tell a lie that is at least somewhat captivating to the listener. In the case of your company or product's positioning, it should mean something to your target audience. Which means you better have done your homework into their hot buttons beforehand. What's important to them? What's not? What benefits can they not do without? Find out, and ensure that your positioning hits those notes.

1. Ease of Use.

The slideshow software should be easy to master. WYSIWYG interface is most important. Do remember, we're not experts in Flash. Our purpose is to make a slideshow as easily as possible.

2. Features.

Transition effect is something attracting users most. Therefore, a large number of transitions are necessary, which make your slideshows more attractive. And software should have existing library, which means preset photos, music, background pictures, template, clipart, etc. are included. The software should also allow users to drag and drop photos from outside source, and control the duration. It's better if the program allows editing the photos to suit your slideshow, importing music or adding narration. Last but not least, the ability to preview before publishing.

3. Output Format.

Basically, the slideshow can be published as SWF format. Some software provides publishing as exe, html, screensaver or online album as well.

4. Support.

Good software manufacturers should at least provide tutorials or manual that guides a user how to create a slideshow step by step. FAQ is needed, too. That brings convenience on only to users, but also to the manufacturer. Of course, if possible, we also need phone, fax or online support.

Heavenly-Opportunity: Must Have Software for Landscape Photographers

As landscape photographers, one of the great challenges is knowing when to be at a location for either sunrise, sunset, moonrise or moonset. We recently purchased a software program Heavenly-Opportunity that makes this task much easier for photographers in the United States.

Heavenly-Opportunity accurately predicts the time and location for each of these events, as well as the phase of the moon for over 30,000 locations in the US. The program includes information for much more than just about every city or town in the country. It also includes information on 500 National Parks, National Wildlife Refuges, and recreation areas and 2500 names lakes, mountains or other named geographic feature In the past we had to find information for the nearest major city, now we can have information about the exact location we're planning on shooting at. On my recent trip to Cape Cod, I knew exactly when I had to be on the beach in the Cape Cod National Seashore to get the sunrise photos I wanted.

In addition, the software allows you to enter a latitude and longitude and get information for a specific place. This is a great feature if you are GPS to determine your location.

Another wonderful feature is the ability to search for specific criteria for a location - and determine what dates you should plan on shooting. For example, we've been wanting to get a photo of the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument and U.S. Capitol Building with a full moon over the Capitol. We know where to take the photo from (the US Marine Corps Memorial in Arlington, VA), that if the moon comes up between roughly 80 - 100 degrees and if moonrise after sunset - we should be able to get the image we want. With Heavenly-Opportunities, I know that my opportunities for taking the photo in the next year will be on either September 8, 2006, October 7, 2006, February 2, 2007 or March 4, 2007. Needless to say, all of these dates are already in our calendar.

In a previous newsletter, we have already reviewed another program, Ephemeris, which gives the times for sunrise and sunset and positions of the sun and moon. Ephemeris has three main advantages over Heavenly Opportunity: 1) the interface is a little easier to use, 2) it has a version available for the Pocket PC, so that we can carry it into the field with us more easily, and 3) it's free. If we're going out into the field and want to know when tonight's sunset or moonrise is, then we tend to use Ephemeris. The two main advantages of Heavenly Opportunity over Ephemeris are the much larger number of locations included in the program and the search function. The search function alone is well worth the cost of the software. If we're planning trips, we use this program to plan where and when to be. We wouldn't mind if future versions of Heavenly-Opportunity addressed the first two issues; we certainly won't begrudge paying a reasonable fee for valuable software.

Heavenly-Opportunity is distributed as shareware by Fossil Creek Software of Fort Collins, CO. You can use an unlicensed version for 30 days. After than, you really should purchase the license. The cost for a licensed version is $ 24.95. The license allows you to install as many copies of the program as you need - we have it installed on both our desktop machines and our laptop.
